New Delhi: Union Labour & Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has lauded the government’s decision to allocate funds for labour welfare, calling the introduction of social security for gig workers a "transformative step."

Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, the initiative aims to cover one crore gig workers engaged with online platforms. Under the scheme, these workers will be provided with identity cards and registered on the e-Shram portal, ensuring their access to various social welfare programs.

By bringing gig workers under the ambit of formal social security, the move is expected to offer them enhanced financial stability and protection, bridging a crucial gap in the rapidly growing platform economy.
