Imphal, Feb 3 (PTI) – Former Manipur Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh has accused the state’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh of threatening MLAs with public retaliation if they attempt to move a no-confidence motion against the government.
Addressing the media after meeting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Ibobi Singh claimed that the BJP-led government has failed to address the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state for nearly two years. He alleged that the chief minister's remarks, made during the Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyan at the state BJP headquarters on January 14, were unconstitutional and a direct attack on the rights and privileges of elected representatives.
Allegations Against CM Biren Singh
Ibobi Singh cited the chief minister’s purported statement:"If a no-confidence motion is moved at the upcoming assembly session against the state government by any member, the MLA would be chased by the people and won’t be able to stay at home."
Describing the remarks as "uncivilized and unbecoming of the leader of the House," the Congress leader said such threats mock the role of the opposition and violate constitutional provisions protecting legislators.
Political Fallout and BJP’s Response
Senior BJP leaders, while acknowledging the allegations, have not yet issued an official response but indicated that they might release a statement soon.Ibobi Singh asserted that the opposition would not be intimidated by such remarks and vowed to continue working in the public interest despite threats.
Ethnic Conflict and Legislative Action
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023, which has resulted in the deaths of over 250 people. Amid the unrest, the opposition has been vocal about the government’s inaction in restoring peace. The Congress delegation urged the governor to intervene and advise the chief minister against making such statements. Ibobi Singh warned that if any "unwanted events" occur, the state government should be held responsible.
When asked whether the Congress would move a no-confidence motion in the upcoming February 10 assembly session, Ibobi Singh said the decision would be made after consulting party members.
The political landscape in Manipur remains tense as the state heads into a crucial legislative session.
