Imphal, May 12 – Political parties across Manipur expressed profound grief on Monday over the death of BSF constable Deepak Chingakham, who succumbed to injuries sustained during cross-border firing initiated by Pakistan in Jammu’s R S Pura sector on May 10.
Chingakham, a native of Yairipok Yambem in Imphal East district, was one of eight Border Security Force personnel injured in the shelling. He passed away on Sunday, a day after sustaining the fatal injuries. He is survived by his parents and a brother.
BJP, Congress Pay Tributes
BJP Manipur president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi paid homage, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of constable (GD) Deepak Chingakham of the Border Security Force, who made the ultimate sacrifice while bravely serving the nation during cross-border firing in the R S Pura sector.”Describing Chingakham as a proud son of Manipur, she said his courage exemplified the unwavering spirit and commitment of the people of the state. “We honour his bravery and stand with his family and comrades in this time of grief. His sacrifice will never be forgotten,” she posted on X.
Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra also extended heartfelt condolences, saying, “The people of Manipur, and indeed the entire nation, are proud of his bravery and commitment. We will remember him for his supreme sacrifice for our motherland.”
He added, “May the Almighty grant strength to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers during this time of immense grief.”
Nation Remembers Its Braveheart
The BSF, in an official post on Sunday, confirmed the loss: “Constable Deepak Chingakham sustained fatal injuries during cross-border firing along the International Boundary in R S Pura area, Jammu district, on May 10, and attained martyrdom on May 11.”This incident came a day after the death of Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz, who also succumbed to injuries from the same shelling.
The Border Security Force's Director General and all ranks have expressed deep condolences to Chingakham's family.
A wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the martyred constable will be held at the BSF’s frontier headquarters on Monday.

The cross-border firing followed India’s launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’, a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Tensions escalated along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to casualties on both sides.As the state and the country mourn the loss, Deepak Chingakham's name joins the long list of bravehearts who laid down their lives in service to the nation.
