Imphal, March 3: In a significant step towards restoring peace in violence-hit Manipur, the public surrendered 20 additional firearms across four districts on Sunday, according to police reports released Monday.

The latest weapons surrender occurred in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Jiribam, reflecting continued efforts from locals to respond positively to government appeals.

Details of the Recent Firearm Surrenders

Authorities confirmed that three firearms—including two 9mm pistols—were handed over at the office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Porompat in Imphal East. Meanwhile, residents surrendered four firearms, three grenades, and several related items to Border Security Force (BSF) officials in Bishnupur district.

Additionally, firearms were voluntarily surrendered at police stations in Jiribam, Wangoi, and Sekmai, underscoring the widespread nature of the initiative.

Extension of Surrender Deadline by Governor Bhalla

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla initially issued an appeal on February 20, calling on armed factions and civilians to return weapons looted from security forces and other illegal firearms within seven days. The governor’s appeal led to the surrender of over 300 firearms, predominantly from the valley districts, demonstrating strong community support.

Subsequently, in response to public requests from both hill and valley residents, Governor Bhalla extended the deadline for surrendering illegal and looted weapons to 4 pm on March 6, resulting in additional voluntary surrenders across the state.

Background of Manipur's Ethnic Unrest

The northeastern state of Manipur has witnessed severe ethnic violence since May 2023, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Tragically, the ongoing clashes have claimed more than 250 lives and displaced thousands of residents.

Due to escalating violence, the central government imposed President's rule in Manipur on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The Manipur legislative assembly, whose current tenure extends until 2027, remains suspended.

The government's active engagement and continued appeal for firearm surrender mark critical progress toward bringing lasting peace and stability to Manipur.
