Medininagar (Jharkhand), February 27 – A key member of the banned Maoist outfit Tritya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), involved in a deadly encounter that claimed the lives of two policemen last year, has been arrested in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, authorities confirmed.

Superintendent of Police Reeshma Ramesan announced the arrest at a press conference, stating that a special police team apprehended Upendra Bhuiyan (26) on Wednesday. At the same time, he was on his way to Nagad village to meet his family.

Bhuiyan was allegedly part of an armed encounter on May 26, 2023, in which two police personnel were killed. He had been evading authorities for the past five years, the SP said.

The arrested militant has around a dozen cases registered against him across Chatra, Latehar, and Palamu districts. Acting on information provided by him, the police recovered 652 live cartridges hidden in a forested area.

The arrest is considered a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown against Maoist insurgency in the region. Further investigations are underway.
