Surat, February 26: A devastating fire broke out in a four-storey textile market in Surat on Wednesday morning, marking the second such incident within 24 hours. Firefighters are battling the intense blaze, which has damaged several of the 800 shops housed in the building. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far, according to fire department officials.

The latest fire erupted just hours after a previous blaze on Tuesday afternoon in the building’s basement, where textile stock was stored. Tragically, a worker lost his life due to asphyxiation in that incident. Firefighters had managed to control Tuesday’s fire after several hours of effort.

To combat the fresh blaze, around 30 fire tenders and a large team of personnel have been deployed. Initial assessments suggest that the fire originated on the top floor, likely due to a short circuit. Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the structure as firefighters worked relentlessly to contain the flames.

Kailash Hakim, President of the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA), described the situation as serious. “Fire department teams, police, and FOSTTA members are actively engaged in controlling the fire. The situation remains grave, but firefighters from across the city are on site. We hope the situation is brought under control soon,” he said.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire, while efforts to douse the flames continue.
