Melbourne, February 26 – Australia's left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after undergoing an independent assessment of his bowling action. The clearance follows an extensive review conducted in Brisbane, confirming that his action complies with the ICC’s regulations.

Kuhnemann was reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during the second Test against Sri Lanka last month. Despite the scrutiny, he played a crucial role in Australia’s 2-0 series victory, securing 16 wickets at an average of 17.18. His future in international cricket, however, came under question until the ICC completed its review.

Following the report, Kuhnemann underwent a biomechanical assessment at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, where it was determined that his elbow extension for all deliveries remained within the permissible 15-degree limitset by the ICC.

In a statement, the ICC confirmed:
"Kuhnemann's action has now been deemed to be legal, and the left-arm spinner will continue to bowl in international cricket."

Cricket Australia (CA) also welcomed the decision, affirming that Kuhnemann is free to resume playing. Ben Oliver, CA’s Executive General Manager – National Teams, expressed his satisfaction with the resolution:
"We are pleased for Matt that this matter is now resolved. It has been a challenging period for him, but he has carried himself exceptionally well. He has had the full support of Australian cricket and can now move forward with great confidence."

The ICC regulations stipulate that bowlers must not exceed 15 degrees of arm flexion, beyond which an action is deemed illegal. Kuhnemann’s clearance means he will now be available for selection in Australia’s upcoming three-Test series against the West Indies in June and July.

Since making his Test debut in 2023, Kuhnemann has played five matches, claiming 25 wickets. With the controversy now behind him, the 28-year-old spinner will be keen to reinforce his position in Australia’s Test squad.
