Lucknow, April 1 – Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday strongly criticised the BJP-led governments in several states for their ongoing trend of renaming districts, cities, and institutions, terming it a “narrow-minded” tactic to deflect attention from governance shortcomings.
The renaming spree has become a point of contention across the political spectrum, with critics like Mayawati questioning its motives and implications.
Mayawati Accuses BJP of Hiding Failures Behind Name Changes
Taking to social media platform X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister stated,Mayawati drew a sharp contrast between her party’s approach and the current trend. She highlighted that during the four BSP-led governments between 1995 and 2012, several new districts, tehsils, hospitals, and universities were established — each with a new name — but no pre-existing names were altered.“Like the SP government in UP, the BJP governments of Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have been changing names of districts, cities and institutions. It is not governance through the rule of law but a very worrying narrow-minded politics to cover up their failures based on hatred and discrimination.”
Urges Governments to Learn from BSP's Development-Focused Governance
She urged present-day administrations to take inspiration from the BSP's model of development without erasing historical and cultural identities. According to her, true governance lies in launching welfare initiatives and expanding infrastructure rather than engaging in symbolic name changes.Context: Uttarakhand's Recent Renaming Drive
Mayawati’s comments come against the backdrop of a fresh wave of renaming in Uttarakhand. On Monday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the renaming of 11 locations across Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. The new names are inspired by Hindu deities, mythological characters, and notable BJP and RSS figures, intensifying the ongoing debate on the politicisation of place names. The renaming spree has become a point of contention across the political spectrum, with critics like Mayawati questioning its motives and implications.
