MEA Intervenes for Urgent US Visa as Indian Student Battles for Life After California Accident

New Delhi, Feb 27: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stepped in to assist the family of an Indian student, Neelam Shinde, who remains in a coma following a severe road accident in California.

Shinde, hailing from Satara, Maharashtra, suffered critical injuries to her head, hand, and chest in the accident on February 14. Since then, she has been under intensive medical care at a local hospital.

In light of her condition, Shinde’s family has sought an urgent visa to travel to the US and be by her side. According to sources, the MEA has taken up the matter with US authorities, who are now processing the necessary formalities for an expedited visa grant.

The case was highlighted by Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule, who took to social media platform X on Wednesday to call for swift action.

"Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalised in a local hospital," Sule wrote. She urged authorities to expedite the visa process for Shinde’s father, Tanaji Shinde, who has applied for an emergency travel permit to be with his daughter.

The Indian government continues to coordinate efforts with the US to facilitate the family’s travel at the earliest.
