Srinagar, May 11 – People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday expressed hope that the recently announced understanding between India and Pakistan to halt all military actions against each other will lead to lasting peace.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar after visiting residents displaced from border villages in Baramulla district, Mufti said, “I pray to the almighty that this ceasefire becomes a permanent thing as innocent people lose their lives and homes in case of a conflict.”
Calls for Patience and Support for Displaced Families
When asked about reports of ceasefire violations within hours of the announcement, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister noted that de-escalation is a gradual process.
“It takes time to de-escalate. We should not be gung-ho over everything,” Mufti said.
Highlighting the plight of border residents, she urged the government to extend support for rebuilding their lives. “These people have lost their homes. They are not in a position to rebuild their homes. It is my request to the government that it should provide them accommodation and also monetary help for the reconstruction of their houses.”
Border Situation Remains Grim
Mufti emphasized that the situation remains dire across several border districts.
“The situation is bad in the border districts of Kashmir and no better in Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu districts as well,” she said, calling for urgent attention to the humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict.
Her comments come a day after India and Pakistan reportedly reached a mutual understanding to cease hostilities across land, air, and sea, following days of intense cross-border strikes.
