In a memorandum addressed to the chief ministers of northeastern states, COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba urged the Centre to officially designate the region as a "narco-terrorist emergency zone", emphasizing the need for urgent intervention and resource mobilization to tackle the crisis.
The organization, which represents several civil society groups from the Imphal valley, also stressed the need for a specialized anti-narcotics force solely focused on combating drug-related crimes in the region. It asserted that such a bureau should function with transparency and coordinate closely with state governments and local authorities.
COCOMI further called for a comprehensive probe into the alleged involvement of influential individuals and entities in Manipur, Mizoram, and Myanmar’s Chin state in supporting narco-terror activities. The memorandum also sought decisive actions to dismantle infrastructure linked to drug smuggling and illegal arms trafficking.
With the northeastern region grappling with a growing drug menace, COCOMI’s appeal underscores the urgency of a unified response to curb narco-terrorism and its far-reaching implications.
