Shimla, February 4 (PTI) – Fresh snowfall began in the North Portal of Atal Tunnel in Rohtang and other higher altitudes of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday morning, the local Meteorological Department reported.

Authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution, as snowfall has made roads slippery and reduced visibility. The Lahaul and Spiti Police have advised against unnecessary travel. In Kinnaur district, Kalpa recorded 0.2 cm of snowfall.

Weather Forecast and Warnings

A western disturbance, currently positioned as a cyclonic circulation over west Afghanistan and parts of Iran, is expected to move east-northeast over the next two days, the Met department stated. As a result, light snowfall is likely in several areas, with moderate snowfall expected in Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and the higher reaches of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu districts.

Additionally, light rainfall is forecast for many parts of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu districts between the afternoon of February 4 and midnight of February 5.

On Monday, the local Met station had issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations in Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Kullu, and Sirmaur districts. Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Mandi districts on February 4.

Tourist hotspots, including Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Sissu, are likely to experience light snowfall with intermittent moderate spells from the afternoon of February 4 until the evening of February 5.

Tabo in the tribal Lahaul and Spiti district recorded the lowest night temperature at minus 7.1°C, making it the coldest spot in the region. Meanwhile, Bhuntar in Kullu district experienced the warmest afternoon on Monday, with the mercury touching 25.2°C.

Winter Rainfall Deficit

Himachal Pradesh continues to witness a severe rainfall deficit. From January 1 to February 4, the state recorded only 13.4 mm of precipitation, significantly below the normal 94.1 mm, reflecting an 86% shortfall.

With snowfall increasing and adverse weather conditions persisting, residents and tourists are advised to stay updated with official advisories and plan their travel accordingly.
