Srinagar, April 4 – Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has alleged that he was once again placed under house arrest, preventing him from leading Friday prayers at Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid.

Taking to social media platform X, the Mirwaiz posted, "Another Friday, another house arrest and the authorities' Jama Masjid phobia continues," expressing frustration over what he described as repeated restrictions.

Strong Criticism of the Waqf Bill

In his statement, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also voiced strong opposition to the recently passed Waqf Bill, claiming it poses a serious threat to the religious freedoms of Muslims in India. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have cleared the Bill.

Highlighting concerns over its implications, he wrote, "As things are fast regressing for Muslims in this country, the latest being the highly marginalising Waqf Bill, it doesn't seem far fetched that soon permissions may be sought and permits be issued after verification for Muslims to enter their mosques or be buried in their graveyards."

The comments come amid ongoing debates surrounding the impact of the Waqf Bill and recurring restrictions imposed on the Mirwaiz, particularly on Fridays.
