Aizawl, Feb 3 (PTI) – BJP leader Molin Kumar Chakma is set to take the oath as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram on Tuesday, marking a historic first for the BJP’s absolute majority rule in the council.

According to BJP leader Durjya Dhan Chakma, the swearing-in ceremony will take place at noon at the CADC headquarters in Kamalanagar. As the Lawngtlai district Deputy Commissioner, Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, is currently out of station, Additional Deputy Commissioner Zoramsiama Hmar will administer the oath of office and secrecy.

Following the ceremony, Molin Kumar Chakma is expected to announce his executive members and submit the list for the governor’s approval.

This milestone comes after a period of political turmoil in the CADC. The crisis began with the ousting of former CEM Rasik Mohan Chakma of the Mizo National Front (MNF) through a no-confidence motion on December 11. The council then saw significant defections—eight MNF members switched allegiance to the BJP, while five, including council chairman Mohan Chakma, joined the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).

The shifting political landscape initially left the council without a clear majority, with ZPM holding 10 seats, BJP nine, and MNF one in the 20-member body. On December 16, ZPM members, led by their legislature party leader Mohan Chakma, approached then-Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati to claim their majority. However, further defections saw four ZPM members moving to the BJP, securing the party a majority of 13 seats—above the required 11 for forming an executive body.

Molin Kumar Chakma staked his claim to form the government on December 23, leading to his official appointment as CEM by Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on January 28. The appointment was confirmed in a notification issued by the state District Council and Minority Affairs Secretary, Sangchhin Chinzah, on January 31.

The latest political shifts have significantly altered the council’s composition. The MNF, which initially held 10 seats after the May 9, 2023, elections and had allied with four independent members, has now been reduced to just one member, Rasik Mohan Chakma. Meanwhile, ZPM holds six seats.

With the BJP now firmly in control of the CADC, Molin Kumar Chakma’s leadership is expected to shape the council’s governance in a new direction.
