Aizawl, Feb 3 (PTI) – Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Monday refuted allegations of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the upcoming Village Council and Local Council elections scheduled for February 12.
The State Election Commission had issued show-cause notices to Hmar and PWD Minister Vanlalhlana following a complaint by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which accused the two ministers of breaching MCC norms. Both ministers were asked to submit their explanations by Monday.
According to the MNF, Vanlalhlana allegedly engaged in virtual campaigning for Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) candidates from his ministerial office in Aizawl’s Durtlang local council. A video of the purported campaign has been circulating on social media. The MNF also claimed that Hmar announced upcoming development projects while meeting ZPM candidates in his constituency on January 27, an act deemed a violation of the MCC.
Addressing a gathering at the ZPM office in Aizawl on Monday, Hmar defended his actions, stating that he did not introduce any new projects that would contravene the MCC. “All these projects have already been approved by the government; they are not new initiatives,” he asserted.
Both Hmar and Vanlalhlana have submitted their explanations to the State Election Commission. State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana confirmed to PTI that the commission is currently reviewing their responses and will decide on the matter soon.
The upcoming elections are being closely watched, with political parties intensifying their campaigns amid the enforcement of the MCC.
