New Delhi, Feb 27 – Senior BJP leader and six-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. His appointment came after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta proposed his name during the ongoing maiden session of the eighth Delhi Assembly.
Bisht’s nomination was backed by key BJP leaders, with Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa seconding the motion and Gajender Singh Yadav supporting an additional motion moved by Anil Kumar Sharma.
A veteran in Delhi politics, the 67-year-old leader recently won the Mustafabad seat in the assembly elections, defeating AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad Khan by a margin of over 17,000 votes. Bisht previously represented Karawal Nagar from 1998 to 2015 and regained the seat in 2020.
His election as Deputy Speaker comes in the wake of the BJP’s sweeping victory in the February 5 polls, which ended AAP’s decade-long rule in the national capital. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to 22. The Congress failed to win any seats.
The newly convened Assembly session marks the beginning of a new political phase in Delhi, with the BJP asserting its dominance in the state legislature.
