Mother of two-year-old girl killed in Kerala held for job fraud

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 2 (PTI) – In a shocking turn of events, the mother of the two-year-old girl who was allegedly murdered by her maternal uncle in Balaramapuram has been arrested for job fraud, police confirmed on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Sreethu, a resident of Kottukalkonam, was taken into custody for reportedly swindling Rs 10 lakh from a couple by falsely promising them a job in the Devaswom Board. According to police sources, she collected the amount over multiple transactions starting in January 2024, duping a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, Shiju, and his wife.

An FIR has been registered against her under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
  • Section 316(2) – Criminal breach of trust
  • Section 318(4) – Cheating
  • Section 336(2) – Forgery
Following her arrest, Sreethu was presented before a local court, police officials confirmed.

Unfolding Murder Case

Meanwhile, the investigation into the brutal murder of her two-year-old daughter continues. On Thursday, police arrested Harikumar, the child's maternal uncle, for allegedly throwing the toddler into a well, leading to her tragic death. Authorities stated that Harikumar had confessed to the crime.

Amidst the ongoing probe, Sreethu was also subjected to several hours of questioning in connection with the murder. While police have not yet confirmed her direct involvement in the child's death, they have not ruled out the possibility, indicating that further investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the crime.

Her arrest in the fraud case adds a new layer of complexity to the investigation, with police officials stating that a detailed probe will be conducted into both matters.
