Mumbai, February 9 A 63-year-old woman died and her daughter was injured after a fire broke out in their apartment in a 13-story building in the Vile Parle area of Mumbai on Monday, officials said.
The fire erupted on the 13th floor of the Suvidha Pearl Building at 9:51 AM. At least five fire engines and other vehicles from the Mumbai Fire Brigade extinguished the flames after three hours.
A Vile Parle police station official said the fire originated in an apartment owned by the family of the builder who had constructed the high-rise building.
He said Bhavna Satra, the builder's sister-in-law, and her daughter, Aneree, had gone to investigate the cause of the fire when smoke started coming from the apartment.
Satra, who suffers from asthma, died of suffocation, he added.
Police have registered a report of accidental death, the official said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
