28-year-old labourer loses life saving 8-year-old girl stuck in drain

Mumbai, May 19 – A 28-year-old man tragically lost his life while heroically rescuing a child from a nullah in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Sunday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The incident took place in the Ramabai Nagar locality when an eight-year-old girl entered the nullah to retrieve a ball and became trapped in the silt and waste. Shehzad Sheikh, a daily-wage labourer who witnessed the situation, immediately jumped into the water body in an attempt to save the child.

According to the police, Sheikh successfully managed to grab the girl and handed her over to another bystander. However, he became entangled in the thick silt and debris himself and was unable to free himself.

Emergency services, including the police and fire brigade, were called to the scene and managed to pull Sheikh out of the nullah. He was rushed to a hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Authorities have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in connection with the incident. Sheikh is being remembered as a selfless individual who laid down his life to save another.
