Mumbai, February 26 – A tragic case of violence unfolded in Mumbai's Mulund area, where a 56-year-old man allegedly set his mother-in-law ablaze inside a tempo, leading to both their deaths due to severe burn injuries.
According to police reports, Krishna Daji Ashtankar, a tempo driver, lived in his vehicle after his wife moved out six months ago to work as a caretaker for a patient in Borivali. His son and married daughter resided separately. Struggling with alcohol addiction, Ashtankar reportedly harbored resentment towards his 72-year-old mother-in-law, Babi Daji Usare, whom he blamed for his wife's decision to live apart.
Investigations revealed that Ashtankar lured Usare into his tempo under the pretense of taking her to the hospital for eye surgery on Monday. Once inside, he allegedly shut the vehicle’s rear shutter, assaulted her with a heavy object, and then set her on fire. However, he, too, was caught in the flames inside the confined space, sustaining fatal injuries.
Alerted by passersby, police and fire brigade teams rushed to the scene. The tempo’s shutter was forcibly broken down, and both victims were taken to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Authorities have registered a case of murder against Ashtankar, and further investigations are underway.
