Mumbai, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a significant upgrade for Mumbai's suburban railway network, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that new-design trains equipped with enhanced features for passenger comfort and reduced overcrowding will soon be introduced.

Addressing a press conference via video link from New Delhi, Vaishnaw detailed that railway projects worth ₹16,400 crore are currently in various stages of completion across Mumbai’s Central and Western Railway networks.

One of the key developments includes a reduction in the time gap between two local trains. Presently, the interval stands at 180 seconds, which will be reduced to 150 seconds and eventually to 120 seconds. This change aims to ease congestion and allow for more frequent train services.

"A plan for new-design trains on the Mumbai suburban network will be announced soon," Vaishnaw stated. He highlighted that these trains will feature improved acceleration, an upgraded ventilation system ensuring higher oxygen content, and better suspension systems for enhanced passenger comfort.

Additionally, the minister revealed that nearly 10% more services—around 300 additional local train trips—will be introduced in phases, supplementing the existing 3,000 daily services. "Almost 300 km of new tracks will be laid in the city," he added.

Vaishnaw also emphasized the record railway budget allocation of ₹23,778 crore for Maharashtra in the Union Budget 2025-26, marking a 20-fold increase compared to allocations made under previous UPA governments.

To ensure the smooth execution of railway projects, Maharashtra has signed a tripartite agreement with the central government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), facilitating seamless cash flow and expedited project completion.

These developments mark a transformative phase for Mumbai’s railway infrastructure, promising improved efficiency and greater commuter convenience.
