Accused lured the victim with a promise of high returns over 4.5 years

Thane, May 17 – A 53-year-old woman from Goregaon, Mumbai, has been allegedly defrauded of nearly ₹79 lakh over a span of four and a half years by a man she befriended on Facebook, police officials revealed on Saturday.

According to a statement from Kharghar police station in Navi Mumbai, the accused, identified as Zuber Shamshad Khan, persuaded the woman to invest in a cryptocurrency scheme by promising high returns. The victim, convinced by the prospect of lucrative profits, made multiple transactions amounting to ₹78,82,684 between October 2020 and March 2025.

The scam surfaced when the woman requested a refund of her investment, only to face repeated refusals from Khan. Realizing she had been deceived, she approached the authorities.

Following her complaint, police registered an FIR on May 15 against Khan under Section 318(4) (Cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and further investigation is underway.

Online Fraud on the Rise

The case underscores the growing risk of online financial frauds, particularly those involving cryptocurrency investments promoted through social media platforms. Authorities urge citizens to exercise caution and verify the credibility of any investment scheme before committing funds.
