February 14, New Delhi — During the Munich Security Conference, European leaders have called for a reset in transatlantic relations amid strained ties between Europe and the United States.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged a stronger and more united Europe to help rebuild its relationship with Washington on Friday. He called on the U.S. to "repair and revive trust" at a time when global stability is under strain, warning that the traditional international order is weakening amid rising great-power competition. He also said that the U.S. could not go it alone and stressed that Europe must strengthen its own defenses, while referring to confidential talks with France on nuclear deterrence, hinting at discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the conference sidelines in Germany. During the meeting, French President Macron praised the "unique" relationship between the United Kingdom and France, highlighting shared interests in the economy, industry, migration, and security.

The Munich Security Conference is being held from February 13 to 15.
