Mystery Deepens as 4-Year-Old in Kottayam Hospitalised After Chocolate Allegedly Contains Benzodiazepines

Kottayam, Kerala – March 2: In a perplexing incident reported from Kottayam district, Kerala, a four-year-old boy was hospitalised last month after he complained of dizziness following the alleged consumption of chocolate at his school. Subsequent medical tests revealed benzodiazepines—a powerful depressant—in the child's urine, according to police.

The incident occurred on February 17, when the young boy returned home from his school feeling drowsy. Concerned by her son's condition, the child's mother made inquiries at the school. A teacher reportedly informed her that the boy was seen eating a chocolate. Initially admitted to a local hospital, the child was later shifted to Amrita Hospital in Ernakulam, where the presence of benzodiazepines was confirmed through a urine test.

A police officer from Manarcad Police Station described the situation as unclear, stating, "It is not clear where he got the chocolate from or how the benzodiazepine entered the child's body." As of now, no official case has been registered in connection with this incident.

The issue surfaced prominently on Sunday, March 2, when television channels highlighted allegations from the child’s family that linked his dizziness directly to the consumption of the chocolate. Responding to these developments, the police conducted a preliminary inquiry based on information provided by Amrita Hospital but found no evidence of negligence on the part of the private school involved.

School authorities have maintained their stance, insisting the child was in good health when he left the premises with his grandfather. Additionally, authorities confirmed that another student who had shared part of the same chocolate displayed no symptoms and remained healthy.

The hospitalised boy reportedly experienced elevated blood pressure levels, prompting medical staff to keep him under close observation in the ICU for several days.

Adding complexity to the case, the child's mother, a lab technician separated from her husband, has filed formal complaints seeking a detailed investigation. The complaints were lodged with the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP). Further complicating the investigation, police noted the child initially stated his mother had given him the chocolate—a claim she strongly denies.

Authorities continue their investigation, as the circumstances surrounding the chocolate's origin and how the depressant entered the child's body remain unresolved.
