Mahakumbh Nagar (Uttar Pradesh), Feb 3: The Maha Kumbh’s third grand ‘Amrit Snan’ on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami saw the Naga sadhus emerge as the prime attraction, captivating a vast gathering of devotees by the Triveni. Their ash-smeared bodies and complete renunciation of worldly ties added a mystique that left onlookers spellbound.
A Spectacle of Tradition and Skill
Leading most of the Akharas during the holy bathing ritual, these ascetics demonstrated remarkable weapon-handling skills—expertly wielding spears, swords, and tridents. The rhythmic beats of the damru (small, two-headed drum) echoed through the air as the Naga sadhus showcased traditional combat techniques.Enthralling Procession
Many of these sadhus arrived on horseback, while others traversed the banks barefoot, draped in garlands and holding tridents high. Eager photographers and devoted pilgrims flocked to capture these moments, and the sadhus did not disappoint—some even sporting black sunglasses, much to the delight of the crowd.Spotlight on Female Sanyasis
Amid the celebration, a significant number of female Naga sanyasis also took part, clad in saffron and unstitched garments. To become a Naga sanyasi, these women must first renounce their families and perform Pind Daan—not only for their ancestors but also for themselves—symbolizing a complete detachment from worldly ties.This vibrant display of spirituality and tradition on Basant Panchami underscores the rich cultural tapestry of the Maha Kumbh.
