Chumoukedima hosts grand finale of Nagaland Super League as CM unveils transformative sporting roadmap
Dimapur, April 2:Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has announced three major initiatives aimed at transforming the sports ecosystem in the state, with a sharp focus on football and youth development. The announcement was made during the valedictory function of the maiden Nagaland Super League (NSL), held at the Chumoukedima Football Stadium on Tuesday.
The three key initiatives are:
- Nagaland Football Academy
- Chief Minister's Sports Scholarships
- Nagaland International Gold Cup
Nagaland Football Academy: Building Future Stars
The Nagaland Football Academy will be established as a professional, state-supported institution at the Chumoukedima Football Stadium. The academy will operate in collaboration with an internationally reputed organization to train and develop young football talent from the state.“This initiative will nurture future stars and elevate Nagaland’s presence in Indian football,” said Rio.
Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarships: Direct Investment in Talent
The CM Sports Scholarships aim to provide talented youth with direct funding and access to top football academies across the country. The scholarships will be facilitated in partnership with the Nagaland Olympic Association, affiliated sports associations, and national federations.“Young talents selected through expert professionals will be sent to high-performance sports academies aimed at medal prospects at the highest levels of sport,” Rio emphasized.
Nagaland International Gold Cup: A Global Platform
To further boost exposure for local players, Rio announced the launch of the Nagaland International Gold Cup, which will feature:- 4 local teams
- 4 national teams
- 4 international teams
“This event will bring national and international exposure right to our backyard and put Nagaland firmly on the football map,” Rio added.
A Call to Invest in Grassroots and Infrastructure
Urging both public and private stakeholders to step forward, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of investing in grassroots development, infrastructure, and capacity-building.“Sport is more than competition. It is character, unity, resilience, and hope,” said Rio. “The NSL is a promise to every young boy and girl in the hills and valleys of our state that if they dare to dream and stay true to their purpose, the world will take notice.”
Deputy CM Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Sports
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton echoed Rio’s sentiments, stating that the current government has been proactive in supporting sports across disciplines. Capping off the event, Barak Football Club defeated Longterok FC with a convincing 3-1 win to become the first champions of the Nagaland Super League.The event not only marked a milestone in the state's sporting history but also laid the groundwork for a brighter, football-driven future for Nagaland.
