Amit Shah Pays Tribute to Nanaji Deshmukh, Highlights His Role in India's Political History

Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh – February 27

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday lauded the contributions of social reformer and politician Nanaji Deshmukh, emphasizing his pivotal role in shaping India's political landscape. Speaking at an event commemorating Deshmukh's 15th death anniversary, Shah credited him for his instrumental role in the formation of the Janata Party, which led to the establishment of the first non-Congress government in 1977.

Shah praised Deshmukh's influence, stating that certain individuals leave an indelible mark on history, becoming catalysts for change. A recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, Deshmukh was recognized for his contributions across various fields, including rural development and politics.

Nanaji Deshmukh's Role in Janata Party Formation

Born in Maharashtra, Deshmukh worked as an RSS pracharak in Uttar Pradesh before emerging as a key figure in national politics. Shah highlighted his efforts in merging the Bharatiya Jana Sangh with other parties, which resulted in the birth of the Janata Party. This move ultimately led to the defeat of the Congress in 1977, following the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

"When there was uncertainty about the future without Congress, Nanaji Deshmukh stepped forward and played a crucial role in uniting opposition forces. His efforts contributed to a 19-month-long struggle against dictatorship, which culminated in a victory for democracy," Shah remarked.

He further noted that after the Emergency period, no leader ever dared to impose such restrictions again in India.

Vision for Rural Development and Nationalism

Shah also acknowledged Deshmukh’s advocacy for "Bharatiyakaran" (Indianization) over Jawaharlal Nehru’s Western-influenced policies. He credited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for realizing the vision of Bharatiya Jana Sangh’s co-founder, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, and Nanaji Deshmukh, ensuring that development reaches the poorest of the poor.

"In the last decade, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, 60 crore people have received houses, toilets, free ration, and health coverage worth ₹5 lakh. It was after BJP came to power that Nanaji Deshmukh was conferred the Bharat Ratna," Shah noted.

Shah also recalled former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s reference to Deshmukh as a "Rashtra Rishi" and reiterated that his life’s work continues to shape India's development policies.

Political and Social Contributions

Deshmukh was elected as an MP from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh in 1977. Despite his victory, he met his electoral rival— a Maharani from the region’s erstwhile royal family— and sought her support for the constituency’s development.

Beyond politics, Deshmukh made significant contributions to various fields, including art, industry, and public service, leaving a lasting impact in all these sectors.

Ram Darshan Complex Inauguration

During the event, Shah also inaugurated the newly renovated Ram Darshan complex, emphasizing Chitrakoot’s spiritual significance as a place where Lord Rama spent a major part of his exile.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also addressed the gathering, reflecting on Deshmukh’s legacy and the importance of his contributions to Indian society.
