Islamabad, May 10 – Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday hailed Pakistan as a "peace-loving" nation following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement with India, while also asserting the country's ability to defend itself.
His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump confirmed that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after days of heightened military tensions.
Taking to social media platform X, Sharif stated, “Pakistan is a peace-loving country and prefers peace, but also knows how to defend itself.” The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief went on to congratulate both the civilian and military leadership for their roles in the development.
“Thanks be to Allah Almighty for making Pakistan proud. I congratulate the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Sindhu, and the armed forces of Pakistan,” he added.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party and former foreign minister, also welcomed the move. He said, “War, violence and aggression are never the answer. Now that both India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire and dialogue, we welcome this as a victory for diplomacy.”
Bhutto Zardari also appreciated the role played by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and other international actors in facilitating the agreement.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Gohar Ali Khan said the country’s strong response brought about the ceasefire. Speaking to Geo News, he remarked, “Our response forced India to come up with the white flag.”
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also took to X to express her pride. She praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, General Munir, the armed forces, and her father Nawaz Sharif for proving that Pakistan is in "safe and patriotic hands."
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar officially informed the public about the agreement. “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he posted.
The ceasefire agreement has drawn praise across Pakistan’s political leadership, positioning it as a diplomatic win and a step forward for regional peace.
