Government Targets a Naxal-Free India by March 31, 2026
New Delhi, April 1 — Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a significant reduction in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas, stating that Naxal violence is now restricted to just six districts across India, down from 12.Highlighting the government's aggressive stance on internal security, Shah emphasized the Modi administration's goal of building a "Sashakt, Surakshit, and Samriddh Bharat" (Empowered, Secure, and Prosperous India).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shah wrote,
"Taking a giant stride towards building a Naxal-free Bharat, today our nation achieved a new milestone by significantly reducing the number of districts most affected by left-wing extremism to just 6 from 12."
Government's Relentless Push Against Naxalism
Shah reiterated the government's commitment to completely eliminating Naxalism by March 31, 2026, underscoring the administration’s dual approach of tough enforcement and inclusive development.According to data from the Ministry of Home Affairs, districts affected by LWE are classified into two categories:
- Most-Affected Districts – a classification introduced in 2015.
- Districts of Concern – a term added in 2021.
- 35 districts in 2015
- 30 districts in 2018
- 25 districts in 2021
- Now reduced to just 6 in 2025
A Strategic Shift in Counter-Insurgency
The reduced geographical spread of LWE-affected regions marks a shift in the internal security landscape. With intensified counter-insurgency operations and development-focused strategies, the government continues to press for lasting peace and progress in formerly insurgency-hit areas. The Home Ministry remains focused on further shrinking the footprint of Naxal influence, with 2026 set as a critical deadline for a complete resolution.
