– A Naxalite was killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district, police confirmed on Monday. The clash occurred on Sunday afternoon in a forested region along the border of Kanker and Narayanpur districts during an anti-Naxal operation.

According to a police official, the operation was conducted by a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Border Security Force (BSF) following intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoist cadres from the North Bastar and Maad divisions in the area.

Post-encounter, security personnel recovered the body of the slain Naxalite along with a firearm. Further details are awaited as the forces have yet to return from the site, the official added.

This latest incident follows a significant encounter in Bijapur district on Saturday, where security forces eliminated eight Naxalites. With this, the total number of Naxalites neutralized in Chhattisgarh this year has risen to 50.

The Bastar division, comprising seven districts, including Kanker, has seen the highest number of casualties, with 34 Maoists killed so far. Notably, a major operation in Gariaband district under the Raipur division on January 20-21 resulted in the killing of 16 Naxalites.

In 2023, security forces successfully neutralized 219 Naxalites in various encounters across the state, as per police records.

This continued crackdown highlights the intensified efforts of security forces in tackling Naxal insurgency in the region.
