Initiative aims to guide youth on the social, psychological, and behavioural aspects of marriage

The National Commission for Women (NCW) will launch 21 pre-marital counselling (PMC) centres across nine states to offer expert guidance on various aspects of marriage, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar announced on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Rahatkar emphasized that the primary goal of these counselling centres is to educate and prepare the younger generation for happy and healthy marital relationships.

"The aim is to provide guidance to the younger generation on how to have a happy marriage," Rahatkar stated.

Extensive Consultations and Expert Training Behind PMC Initiative

Rahatkar explained that the initiative resulted from extensive consultations involving over 100 marriage and relationship experts from across India.

"We held consultations in Pune, where experts discussed what should be included in the PMC programme. We also conducted 'training of trainers' for counsellors to identify key topics that need to be covered," she added.

Centres Launching on International Women's Day

The PMC centres are set to officially open on Saturday, coinciding with International Women's Day. Initially, these centres will be established in:

  • Rajasthan: Bikaner
  • Madhya Pradesh: Bhopal
  • Maharashtra: Nashik, Latur, and Mumbai
  • Gujarat
  • Odisha
  • Kerala
  • Uttar Pradesh: Faridabad

The centres will be strategically located near marriage registration offices for easy accessibility.

Future Expansion Plans Across India

Rahatkar shared the NCW's vision to expand this network further, aiming to have similar counselling centres in every district nationwide. Each centre will occupy a space of around 150-200 square feet and will be staffed by professionally trained counsellors.

Additionally, she requested support from district collectors to promote awareness by placing hoardings, banners, and distributing informative brochures in universities, government offices, and marriage registration venues.

"We have prepared well, but as we move forward, new issues will emerge. We plan to engage with colleges and create social media platforms to reach a wider audience," Rahatkar noted.

Honouring Women Advocates and Constitution Makers

Coinciding with International Women's Day celebrations, NCW in collaboration with Akhil Bharatiya Abhivakta Parishad, a lawyers' body, will host a special event on March 8-9 in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. More than 1,200 women advocates will be honoured for their significant contributions.

Mira Khadkar, Vice President of the Parishad, remarked:

"Women advocates are the backbone of justice, and their expertise is instrumental in creating a more equitable legal system."

Moreover, the NCW will organize a special exhibition at Parliament highlighting the achievements of 15 influential women who played pivotal roles in drafting the Constitution of India.
