February 14, New Delhi – The chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman, stated that maintaining peace and law and order would be the top priority of the incoming government.
Following the party's landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, he warned that any form of anarchy would not be tolerated.
Addressing his first post-election press conference in Dhaka, Tarique urged political actors to exercise restraint and called for national unity.
In the polls, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured 209 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats.
He dedicated the victory to the people, saying that democracy and the "true essence of freedom" had been restored.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Rashid said that the newly elected Members of Parliament are expected to take oath within three days of the gazette notification, and the new cabinet is likely to be sworn in by February 18.
The European Union Election Observation Mission described the elections as credible and competently managed, though it noted areas for improvement, including greater inclusion of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
