Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reviews Progress, Emphasises Sports Infrastructure Push

Guwahati, May 17: A new international-standard cricket stadium is rapidly taking shape at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati and is slated for completion by February next year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced during a site visit on Saturday.

The stadium, which will accommodate 20,000 spectators, is being developed with the capacity to host One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 matches, adding to the region’s growing sports infrastructure.

Third Major Stadium for Guwahati

Guwahati already boasts two prominent stadiums — Sarusajai, a multi-sport facility, and Barsapara, the region’s current sole international cricket venue. The addition of the Amingaon stadium marks a significant boost for cricket and large-scale event hosting in the North East.

"This is a stadium with all modern facilities. Allied infrastructure such as adequate parking and access is also being built, and everything will be ready by February," Sarma told reporters.

Broader Sports Infrastructure Development

CM Sarma also inspected an under-construction swimming pool and visited the National Centre of Excellence badminton stadium, where he watched a practice match. He reiterated the government’s commitment to building sporting infrastructure to nurture talent.

Looking ahead, Sarma said Assam would be well-prepared to host the National Games again, having previously hosted them in 2007. The growing number of stadiums, he noted, would also enable the state to attract large musical performances by leading national and international artists, similar to events hosted in Shillong.

Call to Action for Aspiring Athletes

Highlighting the role of youth in sports development, Sarma emphasised, "We can provide infrastructure and platforms like 'Khel Maharan' to take competitions to the grassroots. But the determination and effort must come from the players themselves."

The upcoming stadium at Amingaon is part of Assam’s broader vision to establish itself as a major sporting hub in the North East, with infrastructure that supports both athletic and cultural events on a grand scale.
