Jammu, February 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated his government's commitment to fulfilling promises, stating that the 2026-27 Budget lays a strong foundation for economic growth, social welfare, and inclusive development in Jammu and Kashmir. Responding to the Budget debate in the Assembly, he said the government will initiate the regularisation of daily wage workers this year and focus on employment generation, infrastructure development, and improved public services. Highlighting key welfare measures, he announced free LPG cylinders funded by J&K's own resources, ₹4,000 monthly assistance for orphans and vulnerable families not covered under other schemes, scholarships for tribal and poor students, and extended free bus travel for persons with disabilities. The Budget gives major thrust to agriculture, horticulture, dairy, livestock, and rural development. A new dairy scheme aims to increase milk production by one lakh litres, while weather-based crop insurance has been introduced for horticulture. He also raised concerns over the potential impact of the Indo-US trade deal on J&K's dry fruit sector. Under the SASCI scheme, J&K will receive long-term, interest-free financial assistance for 50 years. Mission YUVA will promote entrepreneurship and youth employment. Rejecting claims of regional bias, he said the restoration of the Darbar Move reflects balanced development. He also urged industries availing government incentives to prioritize local youth in recruitment. Calling the Budget a roadmap for sustainable and inclusive growth, the Chief Minister said development must begin in rural areas, as "J&K lives in villages."
