New York, May 16 – In a landmark moment, the New York State Senate has officially adopted a resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, marking the first time an American legislative body has honoured the Indian Constitution in this manner.

The resolution, introduced by New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney, the only Indian-origin senator currently serving, was formally adopted during a special ceremony on Wednesday.

Indian Constitution Celebrated as a Symbol of Progress and Democracy

The resolution describes the Indian Constitution as a "guiding framework for India’s ongoing progress " and celebrates India’s rich democratic heritage and honours its commitment to liberty, justice, and equality.

“This is a day to be celebrated in India and worldwide. Across the globe, Indians are making lasting impacts in their communities. This is an opportunity to join together to celebrate and reflect on our shared history, culture, and heritage,” said Senator Cooney.

Senator Cooney shared an emotional account of his personal connection to India, stating:

“This anniversary also holds a special importance for me personally. I was adopted from an orphanage in Calcutta and raised by a single mother in Rochester. Throughout my life, I have worked very hard to maintain a strong connection with India and Indians in my community.”
He emphasized that this resolution not only honours India's democratic foundation but also symbolizes his journey and enduring ties to his heritage.

Honouring Shared Histories of Independence and Resilience

The resolution draws parallels between India and the United States, highlighting both nations' struggles for independence from colonial rule and their shared pursuit of civil and political rights.
“It was that desire for civil and political rights that fueled independence movements both in the U.S. and in India, making our countries kindred spirits in the fight for independence and sovereignty,” said Cooney.

Tributes from Fellow Lawmakers

Fellow State Senator John Liu lauded India’s long-standing democratic traditions, calling it the “first democracy on the planet” and recognising its historical contributions to governance and civil liberties.

The resolution further underscores the significance of Constitution Day and reaffirms a commitment to educating the public about India’s cultural legacy. It highlights the importance of acknowledging the ancestral heritage of New York’s diverse communities and fostering greater cultural understanding.
