New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two individuals for allegedly promoting the ideology of the banned terror outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) and conspiring to establish an Islamic caliphate in India, according to an official statement released on Monday.
The accused, identified as Kabeer Ahmed Aliyar and Bava Bahrudeen, also known as Mannai Bava, were reportedly involved in propagating HuT’s extremist ideology by conducting secret religious gatherings (Bayaans). The agency stated that the duo played a role in organizing an exhibition aimed at showcasing the military strength of Islamic nations, which they allegedly intended to invite (Nussrah) to overthrow the Indian government through violent jihad and warfare.
The NIA had registered a case last year against six individuals linked to the extremist organization. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused were radicalized by HuT’s fundamentalist ideology. HuT, an international pan-Islamist outfit, is known for its efforts to re-establish an Islamic caliphate and enforce a constitution created by its founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani.
Authorities noted that the case revolves around a campaign to establish an "Islamic rule" or "Khalifah" across Tamil Nadu. The Union government had taken action against the organization by issuing a gazette notification in October 2024, banning HuT and its associated entities under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
"The NIA continues its investigation to uncover the involvement of co-conspirators, the outfit’s international network, and its funding sources," the statement added.
