New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday strongly opposed the interim bail plea of jailed Jammu and Kashmir MP Rashid Engineer in the Delhi High Court, arguing that such provisions should only be used in extreme cases of suffering.
Rashid Engineer, who has been in Tihar Jail since 2019 following his arrest in a 2017 terror-funding case, has sought interim bail to attend the ongoing Budget session of Parliament. The session, which began on January 31, is scheduled to conclude on April 4. His plea is set to be heard before Justice Vikas Mahajan on February 4.
The NIA contended that granting bail in this case would be a misuse of the legal provision, emphasizing that such relief should only be extended in cases of intolerable grief and suffering.
Rashid was elected as MP from the Baramulla constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while in custody. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also filed a money laundering case based on the NIA's FIR, which accuses Rashid and others of "conspiring to wage war against the government" and instigating unrest in Kashmir.
The case also involves Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin, and others accused of terror financing.
