New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – Congress MP from Manipur, A B Akoijam, on Monday voiced deep concern over the constitutional breakdown in the state, alleging that even elected representatives are being prevented from performing their duties and are denied free movement.
Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, Akoijam highlighted incidents where central forces had allegedly killed innocent villagers, describing the situation as "complete chaos" in the 75th year of the Constitution's adoption.
He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government of remaining silent on what he termed the subversion of the Constitution in Manipur. Akoijam also pointed out alarming cases of clashes between state police and central forces, further exacerbating the law-and-order crisis.
"The dignity of elected members, the authority of the Assembly—everything has been subverted by the Union government," Akoijam asserted.
Despite the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur since May 2023, which has claimed hundreds of lives, Akoijam criticized the government for failing to acknowledge the crisis in President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament.
Calling for urgent intervention, the Congress MP demanded the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the Manipur situation and address the deepening crisis.
The unrest in Manipur remains a critical issue, with political leaders urging immediate steps to restore normalcy and uphold democratic principles in the state.
