New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – The Ministry of Education has denied any irregularities in the allocation of hostels to students in central universities, affirming that the process remains transparent and merit-based.

Responding to a written query in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, stated that the government has not observed any discrepancies in the hostel allotment system. He emphasized that central universities operate autonomously under their respective Acts, Statutes, and Ordinances.

"The allotment of hostels is carried out by universities as per their respective rules and regulations. There are well-defined norms and guidelines in place to ensure a fair and merit-based allocation process," Majumdar said.

He further clarified that hostel seats are assigned based on several criteria, including the distance of a student's residence, academic performance, social category, and special provisions for differently-abled students.

With this assurance, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and equity in student accommodation across central universities.
