Noida, Feb 26 – A 26-year-old man accused of mobile snatching managed to escape from police custody while undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Noida. However, his attempt to flee to Bihar was foiled as police apprehended him in Delhi, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Shyam Kumar, was initially arrested alongside his accomplice Sameer Ali from Noida’s Sector 15-A on Monday night. The duo was intercepted by a police team conducting vehicle checks, but instead of stopping, they attempted to flee on a two-wheeler. Their escape was thwarted when their bike skidded, leading to their capture, a police official stated.

During the arrest, Shyam Kumar opened fire at the police, prompting officers to retaliate in self-defense. He sustained a gunshot injury to his leg and was subsequently taken to the district hospital in Noida’s Sector 39 for treatment. However, on Tuesday morning, he managed to escape from the hospital despite police personnel being stationed there.

Following the escape, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sumit Kumar Shukla ordered a departmental inquiry against the officials responsible for his custody. Additionally, three police teams were deployed to track down the fugitive.

By Tuesday morning, the Noida Police successfully arrested Shyam Kumar from Delhi. Authorities also recovered a country-made pistol and cartridges from him. Police revealed that he has eight criminal cases registered against him.

A fresh case under theft and the Arms Act has now been filed against Shyam Kumar, a resident of Begusarai, Bihar.
