
Northeast experiencing a new phase of development under PM Modi: Shivraj Singh Chauhan
Guwahati, February 11: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, addressed a press conference in Guwahati on Wednesday, sharing key insights on the Union Budget 2026-27, which was presented in Parliament on February 1. He stated that Assam and the entire North-East region are experiencing a new phase of development and growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chauhan alleged that Assam's environment was unstable during the Congress rule, while new opportunities have emerged in recent years. The minister described the Union Budget as development-oriented and future-ready, stating that it provides a clear roadmap for India's progress. He announced that ₹6,812 crore has been allocated for the North-East. Special focus has been given to railway projects, road connectivity, agriculture, MSMEs, rural development, education, healthcare, medical tourism, and major cities such as Guwahati and Dibrugarh. While speaking about the agricultural sector, the Union Minister said that emphasis has been given on agar and sandalwood cultivation. The budget also includes plans for girls' hostels in every district, promotion of Khadi and handicrafts, support for women's education, and expansion of the Lakhpati Didi scheme through SHE-MARTs. He said the budget will benefit farmers, youth, and the general public, and claimed that the transformation of the North-East since 2014 is clearly visible to everyone. Meanwhile, following the press conference, the Union Minister approved the proposal of the Government of Assam for the procurement of 60,500 MT of rapeseed/mustard for the Rabi season 2026-27 at the Minimum Support Price under the Price Support Scheme in the state.
