NTPC to supply green power to Indian Army from Ladakh microgrid project

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – Power sector giant NTPC has inked a long-term agreement with the Indian Army to supply 200 kilowatts (kW) of round-the-clock renewable energy from its solar-hydrogen-based microgrid in Ladakh.

The power purchase agreement (PPA), signed for a period of 25 years, will facilitate the delivery of uninterrupted clean energy to the Army's base in Chushul, Ladakh. According to an NTPC statement, this initiative aims to replace conventional diesel generators with sustainable energy solutions, significantly reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

NTPC highlighted that this project, the world’s most unique hydrogen-based off-grid microgrid, is located at an altitude of 4,400 meters, where winter temperatures plunge to -30 degrees Celsius. Once operational, it is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1,500 tonnes annually, marking a significant step toward decarbonization and modernization of defense operations in remote Himalayan border areas.

This pioneering initiative aligns with India’s commitment to green energy and strengthens the Army’s operational resilience in challenging terrains.
