Baripada, Odisha, March 2, 2025 – Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Majhi led a spirited mini-marathon in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday, aimed at raising awareness about the conservation of the Similipal Tiger Reserve. The event, dubbed "Run for Similipal," saw over 900 enthusiastic students participate in a 10-km race from Jashipur, near Baripada, to show support for preserving the region's rich biodiversity.
Majhi, who is on a two-day visit to the district, ran a short distance during the event, accompanied by Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, Odisha's Minister for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change. The Chief Minister highlighted the global significance of the Similipal Biosphere and underscored the importance of collective efforts for its protection. "The Similipal Biosphere is renowned worldwide for its ecological richness. This marathon aims to increase public awareness about the necessity of conserving and safeguarding this vital habitat," Majhi stated.
Similipal, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve, spans 2,750 square kilometers and is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. The reserve houses 42 mammal species, including melanistic tigers, Royal Bengal Tigers, leopards, Asian elephants, and the rare four-horned antelope. Additionally, the reserve is a sanctuary for 242 bird species, 30 types of reptiles, and a remarkable variety of plant life, including 96 species of orchids.
