Bhubaneswar, Feb 28: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ambitious target of achieving an expenditure of 85% of the state's total budget estimates for the fiscal year 2024-25, a notable increase from the 81% spending recorded in the 2023-24 fiscal, an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said.

Majhi, who also holds the Finance portfolio, set this enhanced target during a comprehensive review meeting held on Thursday, where the spending performance of various government departments was examined.

Despite challenges arising from state elections, governmental transition, and the delayed budget presentation in September, Majhi described the current level of spending as "apparently satisfactory." To achieve the targeted expenditure, he has instructed ministers to swiftly approve pending expenditure proposals and clear outstanding payments, particularly under welfare schemes.

Highlighting Odisha's commitment to growth-oriented investments, Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that the state’s allocation of 6.1% of its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) towards capital expenditure stands as the highest in India. He underlined the critical importance of both programme expenditure and capital investments in driving Odisha’s overall economic growth.

The statement further commended several key departments for demonstrating commendable spending performance. These departments include Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Resources, Health, Water Resources, Works, Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare, and Cooperatives.

Majhi’s renewed emphasis on higher budget utilization underscores Odisha’s strategic approach to ensuring robust economic growth through improved financial discipline and timely allocation of resources.
