Bhubaneswar, March 2: The Odisha government has announced a new initiative aimed at empowering tribal students, particularly women, with preparatory pilot training. Aimed at preparing them for professional aviation courses, the program will be rolled out in collaboration with a professional training agency.
According to an official statement, the state’s Commerce and Transport Department recently issued a tender to hire a qualified private agency that will be responsible for providing the training. The initiative targets a pool of 300 tribal students, from which 50 will be selected through a rigorous screening process.
The chosen candidates will receive intensive preparatory coaching in Bhubaneswar for a period of eight weeks. The training will cover all key selection parameters required for airline cadet pilot assessments, including English proficiency, personal development, and foundational aviation knowledge. The course will also introduce students to the syllabus set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and provide a broad overview of the flying training process.
Key areas of focus in the program include human performance and limitations, aptitude and psychometric tests, group discussions, interviews, and simulator training to enhance hand-eye-foot coordination and spatial orientation. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to clear the cadet pilot assessment and prepare them for further professional training.
Training sessions will run for six hours a day, five days a week, with a combination of classroom learning, computer-based training, and mock examinations. Self-supervised studies and regular assessments will also be incorporated into the program. Special weekend training will be provided for students who need extra help.
Once the preparatory phase is completed, the 50 selected students will undergo a final round of selection by major private airlines like Air India and IndiGo. These airlines will conduct their own tests to select the top 10 candidates, who will then be offered technical training to become professional pilots.
The initiative is a significant step toward empowering tribal communities in Odisha, providing them with new opportunities for a career in aviation and breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated industry.
