Mandya (Karnataka), Feb 3 (PTI) – A tragic accident in Mandya district claimed the life of a 35-year-old man, while two others are feared to have drowned after an overspeeding car lost control and plunged into a canal on Monday morning, police reported.
The deceased has been identified as Fayaz, a resident of Halahalli village in Mandya taluk. The incident occurred around 7:30 am near the V C canal when the driver, allegedly speeding, attempted to overtake another vehicle. In a devastating turn of events, the car veered off course and fell into the canal, which is reported to be over 100 feet deep.
Local residents managed to rescue one of the four passengers, but the remaining three were swept away by the strong water current. Following extensive search and rescue operations, authorities recovered Fayaz’s body. However, two other occupants remain unaccounted for.
A senior police official noted that the powerful water flow has significantly hampered rescue efforts. Fire and Emergency Services teams have been deployed to assist in locating the missing individuals.
"We strongly suspect that they may have drowned. The top of the submerged car is visible, but due to the heavy water flow, even using a crane to retrieve the vehicle remains a daunting challenge," the official stated.
Authorities continue their efforts to locate the missing individuals as the search operation intensifies.
