Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge write to PM Modi, seek urgent debate on terrorism and ceasefire developments

New Delhi, May 11 – Top opposition leaders have formally demanded an immediate special session of Parliament to address the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the launch of Operation Sindoor, and the evolving situation concerning cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and his Rajya Sabha counterpart, Mallikarjun Kharge, have written separate letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging a collective political response to the escalating security concerns. They stressed the importance of Parliament debating these matters to reflect the country’s united stance against terrorism.

Rahul Gandhi Reiterates Opposition’s Call

In his letter, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the critical need for Parliament to deliberate on the issues.

"I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately. It is crucial for people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead," he wrote.

Gandhi urged Prime Minister Modi to treat the matter with the urgency it demands, saying, "I trust that you will consider this demand seriously and swiftly."

Kharge Supports the Demand

Echoing Gandhi’s sentiments, Rajya Sabha LoP and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also wrote to the prime minister, citing their earlier appeal dated April 28. That appeal followed the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.

"In view of the latest developments, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha has already written to you again conveying the unanimous request of all opposition parties for a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire announcements, first from Washington DC and later by the governments of India and Pakistan," Kharge stated.

"As the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, I am writing in support of the request. I trust you will agree," he added.

Ceasefire Agreement Reached

On Saturday, India and Pakistan agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea following four days of cross-border drone strikes and missile activity. The ceasefire, first mentioned by former US President Donald Trump, was later confirmed by both nations.

The opposition’s renewed push for a parliamentary debate comes amid rising concerns over national security and the need for a coordinated political response to cross-border threats.
