Indian short film "Anuja", a compelling coming-of-age drama set in New Delhi, narrowly missed clinching the Best Live Action Short Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards, losing to Dutch-language science fiction film "I'm Not a Robot".

The winner, "I'm Not a Robot", crafted by writer-director Victoria Warmerdam, follows the unique story of Max, who spirals into an existential crisis after repeatedly failing an online CAPTCHA test, making him doubt his own humanity.

Directed by Adam J Graves and Suchitra Mattai, "Anuja" narrates the heartfelt story of a talented nine-year-old girl, Anuja, who faces the life-altering decision of choosing between pursuing education or joining her sister in factory work—a decision that holds significant consequences for both siblings' futures. The short film features performances by young actors Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag.

Adding notable weight to the film's production, "Anuja" boasts an acclaimed production team, including two-time Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga and global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas as executive producers, along with Hollywood actress and writer Mindy Kaling as producer.

The impactful narrative of "Anuja" was further strengthened through collaboration with Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT)—a non-profit established by filmmaker Mira Nair’s family to support street and working children—as well as Shine Global and Krushan Naik Films.

Other contenders in this fiercely competitive category included acclaimed titles such as "A Lien", "The Last Ranger", and "The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent".

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien, was broadcast live in India via JioHotstar and the Star Plus TV channel, direct from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
