Over 60 Indian Eateries Serve 60,000 Meals to Migrant Workers in Singapore on SG60 and Labour...webp

SINGAPORE, May 19 – In a landmark act of gratitude and inclusivity, more than 60 Indian restaurants distributed 60,000 meals to migrant workers across Singapore on Sunday. The initiative, which coincides with Singapore’s 60th year of independence (SG60) and Labour Day celebrations, aims to honour the contributions of migrant labourers to the city-state's growth.

At the heart of the event was Manpower Minister Dr. Tan See Leng, who addressed migrant workers and volunteers in the Little India precinct, a hub for Indian and Bangladeshi workers. “Your contributions to building our homes, maintaining our infrastructure and keeping our city running smoothly have been invaluable. This celebration is our small way of saying ‘thank you’,” said Tan, acknowledging their role in Singapore’s success.

Largest Single-Day Meal Distribution for Migrant Workers

The event, Singapore’s largest single-day food distribution drive for migrant workers, was jointly organised by the Indian Restaurants Association of Singapore (IRAS) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). The initiative had been in the works since February and saw extensive collaboration between restaurants, volunteers, and public institutions.

“From as early as 4 am this morning, our dedicated restaurant partners started their food preparation and have been serving fresh meals for our migrant friends throughout the day. It is a tall order – but one that has been delivered with a generous helping of heart and a dash of delicious purpose,” Tan was quoted saying by The Straits Times.

Meals Across the Island

Meal packets—offering vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and oriental cuisine—were delivered to 28 dormitories, five recreation centres, several places of worship, and across Little India. The Birch Road distribution centre alone served around 15,000 meals, transforming into a vibrant community venue featuring cultural performances and interactive activities.

Strong Community Support

More than 160 volunteers from Millenia Institute, Pierce Secondary School, various government agencies, and local community partners participated in the food distribution.

The Labour Day observance, held annually on May 1, carries additional meaning this year as it is aligned with SG60 celebrations. “As we celebrate SG60 this year, it is fitting that we also remember the sacrifices and contributions of our migrant friends in the Singapore success story,” Tan said.

He joined workers and volunteers for a shared meal at 7 pm, symbolising solidarity and appreciation.

This community-driven event underscores Singapore’s multicultural values and reinforces the vital role of migrant workers in nation-building.
