New Delhi, May 10 – Amid the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, the spotlight has turned to Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the official spokesperson of the Pakistan Army, due to his controversial familial background. Chaudhry, a three-star general and current Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), is the son of Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood, a nuclear scientist sanctioned by both the United Nations and the United States for his links to al-Qaeda.

Lt Gen Chaudhry has been the face of the Pakistan military in recent press briefings, particularly following India’s intelligence-driven airstrikes on nine terror camps, including major installations of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. These strikes came in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, mostly of tourists.

Father’s Al-Qaeda Connection and Sanctions

According to United Nations records, Chaudhry’s father, Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood, who was born in Amritsar and now lives in Islamabad at the age of 85, is known to have met former al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden. He allegedly shared critical insights regarding nuclear weapons infrastructure and their catastrophic effects.

Mahmood also raised funds for Ummah Tameer-e-Nau, a fundamentalist organisation he co-founded in 1999 to provide humanitarian support in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The group was later banned and designated as a terrorist entity by the US in 2001 for its links to extremist elements.

Although arrested in 2001 over his links to bin Laden, Mahmood was eventually released after authorities assessed he did not possess sufficient expertise to share nuclear secrets. Nonetheless, his name remains on the US Treasury Department’s Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) and Blocked Persons list.

Lt Gen Chaudhry’s Rise in the Military

Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry made history in December 2022 when he became the first officer from the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to head the ISPR. He was appointed by Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir.

Prior to this, Chaudhry served as the Director General of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DESTO), a covert military research agency. He has also held key positions within military operations, underscoring his deep-rooted involvement in Pakistan's defence architecture.

The elder Mahmood, now retired from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, has authored numerous books examining the confluence of religion and science. His writings include "Mechanics of the Doomsday and Life after Death", in which he explores eschatological themes through an Islamic lens.

Broader Ties and Controversy

Ummah Tameer-e-Nau was closely linked with high-profile Pakistani figures, including former ISI chief Lt Gen Hamid Gul. These affiliations have continued to raise eyebrows amid the intensifying military and geopolitical situation in the region.

As the cross-border conflict escalates, Lt Gen Chaudhry’s lineage and affiliations may attract deeper scrutiny, particularly in light of his father’s contentious legacy and past ties with global terror networks.
